Heywood BMX Track Session

Me and Paul had a great little session last week over at an old school 80s BMX track in Heywood, north Manchester. The track was built sometime in the 80s and was resurfaced about 6 years ago and is due for another resurfacing in the next couple of months.  It hasn't been used for racing for as long as I can remember but it is still in reasonable shape and can pretty much be ridden all year round.  The best thing about it as well is that, unlike the majority of new tracks, the jumps are 80s sized...i.e. not too big!

The track starts with the usual start hill which runs into a 5 ft speed jump double at the bottom.  This takes you into a loose berm and then straightens onto a strange 4ft high  pump lump which takes you nicely into a 10ft table top. After this there is a large double and then a massive step up which can only be cleared at race speed.  After this there is a large 180 berm which takes you into a small double and then onto an S berm which runs onto the final straight which consists of a set of 3 small doubles.

Paul hard at work

We usually play around on the first 3 features and do most of our sesssioning on the table top.

After hitting the table a few times, on this occasion, we decided to build a new lip on the left side of it as it was lacking a bit of  kick.  Luckily Paul had his folding shovel with him so we got to work sculpting the new feature.

It took us a few goes getting it right as the first few attempts gave us no shape in the air whatsoever.  Eventually we got it right though and it is now running pretty sweet! Here's a pic of Paul clearing it with ease.

A few years ago I spent quite a bit of time here practicing my 180s over this table so I thought I'd try and get them nailed again on the new lip (and a different bike)...it took a few goes but eventually I got there...

The bmx track has had £18000 spent on it to rebuild it, really worth checking.
