Whinlatter Forest Altura Trail, Cumbria
Friday, 16 January 2009
As well as doing my freeride/dh/street stuff I also do a little bit of XC... I ride with a local group (called GBUK) on a Thursday night pretty much all year round. And before any of those guys say, yes I will be changing the freewheel on my Cove Stiffee this weekend and will definitely be out next week!
Anyway, every year we do an xmas ride, usually at one of the north Wales trail centres as they can be ridden even in the wettest conditions. This year however the venue was to be the recently completed Whinlatter Altura trail in the Lake District. Below is what the Forestry Commision have to say about the trail...
"Whinlatter Forest Park is home to the longest purpose-built mountain bike trail in the Lake District. The Altura Trail puts the mountain back into biking and has been built for experienced riders with good off road skills and a higher level of fitness and stamina. The trail is a 19 kilometre red grade mountain bike route which includes 15 kilometres of new single track. There are challenging single track sections and popular features like berms, jumps, rock features, skinnies, cork screws and table tops. There are also fantatsic views of Derwent water, Bassenthwaite, Helvelyn and Skiddaw as the trail takes the rider to an altitude of 500m (1600ft) above Keswick."
Unfortunately as I was otherwise engaged with the 'Finland Fiasco' (see previous blogpost) that weekend I couldn't attend but luckily one of the guys, RetroRic, did a bit of filming and stuck it up on youtube. From what the guys say and looking at the footage it looks like a pretty cool place with some great descents, great views and a few skinnies to boot. This one looks like it is on the list of places to visit in Feb... Anyway, take a look at the vid and see what you think...and before you say...yes some of the guys do insist on riding the entire trail with their saddle stuck up their arse...but that's XC riders for you!!
