Build day at Farmer Johns
Monday, 16 February 2009
It was a misty, drizzley Sunday morning but this didn't put off about 25 dedicated trail builders, tools in hand, rocking up to Farmer Johns yesterday for a day of hard graft.
The order of the day was to a) do some maintenance on existing trails and b) start work on a planned 70 metre run of north shore. We opted for the latter and got to work digging about 20 2ft deep holes for the support uprights. Once this was done we then had to move in the cut down telegraph poles which were going to act as the supports for the ladders. Having done our bit John then got to work with the chainsaw getting rid of any branches that interfered with the line of the structure. By the end of the day the fruits of our labour were starting to take shape.
John's got plenty of interesting features in mind for the shore including a seasaw, a corkscrew and a gap jump. The latter looks like it will be pretty cool as we will be incorporating an existing tree trunk, using it as the take off for the gap jump over the fence. The plan is for the shore to run up to the log continuing its transition in line with the log, which will have its top flattened. There will then be a ladder transition on the other side of the fence for landing.
There will be another build day in a couple of weeks time which will involve getting the full length telegraph poles in place as runners and then getting some slats in place. Once this is complete that's only about a third of shore built as Farmer John has got a lot more planned...it is a pretty long term project but once complete it should be pretty awesome. Best bit of all it means you don't have to get muddy or go through any gates on the way to the trails as the shore starts right out of the car park and goes over all the mud and fences!
